Haven’t been playing games much.

November 25, 2008

Sorry about the lack of updates. I’m caught up with schoolwork but hopefully this thanksgiving break will give me a chance to play games more. I’ll probably be skipping a whole generation of NES games to play Chrono Trigger because I am pretty hyped up for that game. Don’t worry. I’ll go back to NES/SMS right after.

But yea I’m really excited about playing Chrono Trigger. Some people think it’s the best 2D non Final Fantasy game of all time so I’m pretty damn excited.

Woohoo.

Decision time

November 13, 2008

After finding out that Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t originally released for the Sega Master System, I’ll be dropping this game for a while and I will play the Mega Drive/Genesis version because the original is the best.

And with that mindset I will also be playing the original NES version of Dragon Warrior. This might be a bit of a problem when it goes to the later Final Fantasy titles because I don’t read Japanese. (Although I wish I took Japanese instead of Spanish because I have more uses for Japanese)

So yea. I’ll be a bit slower with updates during the weekdays since I have school so you should all deal with that.

Gaming Log 4 – I am Loto’s descendant!

November 11, 2008

Dragon Warrior is pretty hard. Not very straightforward in the beginning as I try and wander around the huge overworld in a tiny screen with no holding-B-makes-you-run-faster option. So I was really lost in the beginning but I realized you have to talk to everyone.

I’m currently playing the GBC remake of the game… From what I’ve read, it stays more true to the original Japanese version. Instead of Erdrick in the first NES version, the guy is called Loto. It’s slightly easier to get gold/exp which is fine with me.

So what I’ve achieved so far… Not much. I have an Iron Axe and an Iron Shield as well as some armor that I haven’t upgraded yet. I’m currently level 8 and I barely made it to that Rimuldar place and I bought some keys so I can unlock stuff.

Anyway I’m off to play some WipEout HD because one of my sister’s friends got it and he’s willing to share games with me. I got Tekken and that 2 dollar game and flOw from him. It’s all good.

If I get enough readers will people want to donate to my goal of getting a PSP so I can have more means of playing all these old school games?

😀

Gaming Log 3 – Donkey Kong is fun

November 11, 2008

The first games to feature Mario and Donkey Kong… Of course Mario was called Jumpman back then. Both of these games feature 3 levels and I can swear I’ve played flash games similar to these in the past. After you beat the 3 levels it just kinda restarts then you play it over and over so I stopped. But it was a pretty fun and enjoyable game. If there were more levels I’d probably still be playing this (especially Donkey Kong Jr.)

This game isn’t an official NES game. It was originally released for like those arcade consoles which isn’t too surprising because it doesn’t have much depth.

A bit about what happens… In Donkey Kong, you (Jumpman/Mario) have to go rescue the Princess from Donkey Kong. The first level you climb up ladders and jump over barrels until you get to the top. In the 2nd level it is kinda similar but there are like elevators and stuff. The 3rd level took me a little longer to figure out as I kept trying to jump onto the platform with the Princess for about a minute, but what you do is like step on all the gold blocks so that Donkey Kong falls down.

I liked Donkey Kong Jr. a lot more… What you do is jump on some ropes/vines and you swing across them so you can get to the very top. The second level is kinda similar and the third one is where you try and push keys up into the locks to free the ropes to Donkey Kong’s cage. The swinging across rope/vine to rope/vine is pretty fun.

But yea, 2 very enjoyable games… Again. But then I’m basically playing all of the good titles so I can’t really say any games suck.

Introducing 3 new games!

November 11, 2008

Since I finished Megaman and Super Mario Bros, I’ll be moving on to 2 new games but I’ll also keep playing Dragon Warrior.

Right now my rotation is…

Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong Jr. (They came together)
Sonic the Hedgehog (On Sega Master System)
Dragon Warrior I (On Gameboy Color)

I know that Donkey Kong isn’t an original NES title but I can’t really pass up the first game to feature Mario and Donkey Kong. I’ll usually keep it at 2 non-RPG games and 1 RPG game but since the Donkey Kong games are more like mini-games I guess they can count as 1.

I’m not too sure what to expect from Sonic… I’ve played Sonic Advance but I’ve never beaten it (harder on a keyboard) but yea… Sonic is another one of those huge gaming franchises and this is the game that started it all.

Happy gaming!

Gaming Log 1 Revisited – Super Mario Bros.

November 10, 2008

So I got around to playing this yesterday and it was pretty fun and easy. After trying to beat the clock on 7-4 (wrong) I went on GameFAQs to check and you had to complete it in a certain sequence (I bet you had to cheat to when you played it back in the day). The Princess is never in the castle. Before and after 7-4 was a breeze except for that last stage that I finished with 5 seconds left. After I finished the game I played again and they just replaced the Goombas with those stupid black things that don’t die unless you hit it with a shell. But Mario is a pretty fun game and it’s pretty good since it came free with your NES and is pretty fun for a quick game. It’s not hard except for like the 2 maze stages that might catch some of you guys off guard because it’s not very straightforward.

But it was fun. I enjoyed it. Turns out the 2 player mode is basically the same thing except you take turns with Mario and Luigi. I think it’s the same so Luigi doesn’t have that stupid jump. I understand how people can see how Super Mario Bros. 3 is a better game (I played Super Mario Advance 2) with the Cape and Yoshi and more levels but considering how this game was made eons ago it was a pretty fun game. Megaman was a lot harder.

Gaming Log 2 – I beat Megaman 1!

November 10, 2008

After a lot of shameful rewinding on my nesDS, I finally beat the game that started it all… Megaman. I was really frustrated near the end against Dr. Wily so I checked some strategy guide to see how they beat him and they used the select thing so it would inflict more damage. I did that. Cause I’m lame. And then I finished the game. That was one of the harder more challenging games I’ve played. Megaman is way harder than Mario. No. Not that way.

It’s too bad that my camera was out of battery to take the last bit where it says FIGHT, MEGAMAN! FOR EVERLASTING PEACE! But I did get the bit where I got to choose the Dr. Wily stage. But I have to admit, that was pretty damn fun. The early boss battles were super easy after you get the correct weapon but that final stage was a bit challenging. The Cyclops/Yellow thing is like crazy you have to dodge the bricks and stuff.

But an excellent game overall even though it is 8 bit.

FIGHT, MEGAMAN! FOR EVERLASTING PEACE!

Gaming Log 1 – The first game on the first console that really mattered.

November 9, 2008

Since I will be doing most of my gaming on my DS (I’m looking forward to getting a PSP since it boasts PSOne + N64 emulation) I might be lacking some in game screen shots… Which kinda sucks since you guys won’t be able to see my certain moments of gaming. Oh well. 😦

Anyway… I don’t think there’s a save feature for this game… o_o

Oh well I guess I’ll be playing this game with an emulator so I can use save states.

First batch of NES Games

November 9, 2008

I’ll be playing more games, but I’ll start with these 3 first. Super Mario Bros was the game that started it all… for the NES. Yea there were like some Mario games before it but this is like the first real Mario adventure type of thing.

I’m also going to start with playing Megaman. I’ve tried playing Megaman before but I found it extremely hard… 2 reasons… I was even younger than I was now and playing these games that are more action packed on a keyboard is pretty different from the way it was designed to be played.

3rd game is the first Dragon Warrior. First game in the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series… I’ll be playing the GBC remake of this game and I’ve actually started already. This was one of the first RPGs and it was made before Final Fantasy. From what I’ve played so far there are its similarities.

So here it is. I’ll be moving on to other games and I am very welcome to your recommendations. Obvious titles that I will play are the Legend of Zelda[s], The sequels to the games that I am playing, and maybe some Contra and Metal Gear. I understand there are a lot of underrated titles so yea I am open to suggestions. I’m also looking at trying out some Sega Mega Drive but when I try too many games at once I will never be able to complete any.

Hi

November 9, 2008

I hope this blog gains some attention throughout the gaming world. Right now I’m a 15 year old armed with a DS, a PS3 and a Wii but I’m bored with the library of games that those 3 systems have currently (And I can’t afford all those PS3 games). so with the power of the internets, I’m going to play through some of the best video games that most people my age have never heard of.

Here are some guidelines that I have already set for this blog.

I’ll try and play games in a chronological order (by generation)

I’m going to start out with NES/SMS games

If there is a remake of the game that doesn’t take too much away from the actual gameplay or improves it a little, I will play the remake (if I can). Examples are the original Final Fantasy vs the remakes. The remake is a lot more playable so I played that. I may go and play the original NES version but i doubt it since I already beat it on the GBA.
